Canal du Midi
The Canal du Midi was built from 1666, by up to 12,000 men, crossing rivers, tunnelling through hills and irrigated from the Montagne Noire. It runs 235 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean that requires over 100 locks. It is a UNESCO world heritage site.
From the grand city of Toulouse to the port of Sete, the canal cuts through the countryside of Southern France. Villages and towns profited from its existence. This can be seen in its grand homes and chateaux that cling to the waters edge. Now canal boats cruise full of tourists and leisure seekers along its treelined banks. Many canal-side restaurants provide an ideal place to relax and watch the boats and barges cruise by. Short trips on the canal can be arranged for you.
