Lastours
Nearby are the historic Cathar strongholds of Lastours, mountaintop Chateaux that date back to the 12th Century. In the valley of the Orbiel, there are four small castles each built on a large 300m high rocky ridge. The four castles of Lastours (Cabaret, Tour Regine, Surdespine, Querthineux), dominate the valley and surrounding area. As protection for the Cabardes region since the early Middle-Ages, Lastours gained importance during the Albigensian crusade. The castles were built to control the access to the Montagne Noire. A former textile factory, now completely restored, located in the heart of the village is the ticket office. This is the starting point for any visit and it displays a permanent photographic exhibition on the villages of Cabardes. A good walk takes you to the top with dramatic views of the valley below.
